This visa are for travellers who would like to enter Australia for tourism, to visit family or for a short business visit. To be granted this visa, the Department of Immigration and Border Protection will need to be satisfied that you are a genuine visitor and have sufficient funds to cover your expenses during your stay in Australia. If you are visiting family and they are sponsoring you for this visit, the department will advise if they require your sponsor to pay a security bond.
What does this visa let me do?
- Have a holiday, visit friends and family
- Conduct a business visit, such as attending meetings, conferences and seminars
- Study in Australia for up to 3 months.
This visa does not allow you to work, though volunteer work may be permitted.
Should you wish to extend your visit at the end of your visa validity, you may seek to extend your visitor visa, provided that your visa does not have the "no further stay" condition. Generally, unless there are exceptional circumstances, your visitor visa will not be extended beyond 12 months.
Parents of Australian Permanent Residents and Citizens are eligible for visitor visas with longer duration, ranging from 1.5, 3 or 5 years. However, these visas will come with the following additional conditions:
- They cannot stay in Australia for more than 12 months in any 18 month period.
- They must mantain health insurance throughout the duration of their visit.
- No further stay.
