On 1 March 2019, Immigration Minister David Coleman has announced that the new temporary Sponsored Parent visa will be made available on 17 April 2019.
Up to 15,000 Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visas may be granted each program year. If the cap is reached in a program year, no further visas will be granted until the next program year commences on 1 July.
What is Subclass 870 Visa?
The new temporary Sponsored Parent (subclass 870) visa allows sponsor to bring their parents to Australia for a longer period of time of up to five years without departing. There is also a chance that parents can stay of up to 10 years given that they must be outside Australia for at least 90 days before applying for another 5 years temporary Sponsored Parent visa.
Visa applications can only be lodge if the sponsorship application has been approved. Thus, sponsorship application must be lodged and approved first before applying for the visa application.
Who are eligible?
To be eligible for the visa, parent must be the biological, adoptive, or step-parent of the sponsor, who must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.

The visa application charge is:
$3,000 for a three-year visa duration;
$5,000 for a five-year visa duration
