From 16 November 2019, 489 visas will be closed to new applicants and will be replaced by the new 491 visa, with 14,000 places allocated per year.
This is a points tested, skilled migration visa which requires either state government nomination, or sponsorship by an eligible family member who is settled in a designated regional area.

Regional Development Australia - Far South Coast welcomes applications for Skilled Regional Sponsored (provisional) Visas, subclass 489, from qualified applicants in professions listed below.
RDA Riverina are now open and accepting EOI/Applications for the skilled regional migration visa (489).
1. Central West Region - Will open in early August 2019. RDACW processing dates for Round One will be adhered to:
- Registration open 5th August and close by 9th August
- Full applications will be required within 7 days following an Invitation to Apply.
- RDACW referrals will close 9th September
